Mission title defence

Mission title defence: the task for the eight drivers racing for Team Mercedes-AMG DTM is obvious. The year 2016 is supposed to make for another glorious chapter in the success story of Mercedes-Benz. After all, motorsport is a tradition for the Stuttgarters. Both Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft as well as Benz & Cie contested the first car race in the history (1894 Paris-Rouen) with different vehicles but in 1926, their merger resulted in the Daimler-Benz AG. In 1954 and 1955, Juan Manuel Fangio won the F1 World Championship for Mercedes-Benz before the Stuttgart based brand retired from motor racing for 30 years to fully focus on the extraordinary challenge represented by designing and developing new passenger cars. In the late 1980s, however, Mercedes-Benz made their road-racing comeback. At first, in 1986, several independent teams entered the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 but from 1988, five teams competed in DTM with Mercedes-Benz works support. This was the season when the Suttgarters made their official comeback in motor racing. Nonetheless, Mercedes-Benz had to wait until 1992 before they could celebrate their first DTM title. At the end of this season Klaus Ludwig was the one who raised DTM trophy up into the sky. With 10 drivers’ titles, 172 race wins and 116 poles, Mercedes-Benz is the most successful manufacturer in the history of DTM. And he most successful works driver in the history of the sport, Bernd Schneider, won his five titles in the years 1995, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2006. For Mercedes-Benz, joining DTM was a trend-setting decision. Since then, the Stuttgarters secured numerous race wins and championship titles in the most different series and categories, with the 2015 season representing the highlight in their 120 years of motor racing history: for the first time, Mercedes-Benz succeeded in winning both the F1 World Championship and the DTM title in the same year.
