At last the racing is on: this weekend, DTM is going to kick off its new season at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. Then, 20 drivers racing for Audi and Mercedes-Benz respectively are going to battle it out for points and wins. Here, we have compiled the most important facts regarding the first DTM round of the 2007 season.
…the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
…the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg has been the venue for the season opener of the DTM since the 1995 season. Before that, the first race of the season always took place at the circuit of Zolder in Belgium.
...with Alexandre Prémat, Lucas Luhr, Mike Rockenfeller and Adam Carroll (all Audi) as well as Paul di Resta (Mercedes-Benz), five drivers are making their debut in the DTM this weekend. This amounts to 25 percent of the entire field.
…Mercedes-Benz has been unbeaten at Hockenheim since October, 2002. The last non-Mercedes-Benz-victory was achieved by Laurent Aiello with the Abt-Audi TT-R on April 21, 2002.
…DTM record winner Bernd Schneider scored 13 of his 41 DTM race wins at Hockenheim. His most recent win at this circuit came during the 2006 season opener. In every year that Schneider won the DTM season opener in the Motodrom, he also went on to win the DTM championship title, which was the case in 1995, 2000, 2001, 2003 and last year.
…the current 4,574 kilometres long circuit has been in use since the 2003 season final. Before the reconstruction of the track, the season opener always took place at the so called “Kurzanbindung” (short loop) of 2.683 kilometres, while the season final was held at the 6.823 kilometres long old Grand Prix track.
...last year’s runner-up Bruno Spengler, is currently holding the lap record for DTM cars at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. In the opening round of the 2006 season. the Canadian set a fastest lap time of 1.34.726 minutes with his AMG-Mercedes C-Class, equalling an average speed of 173.823 kph.
