The C-question, or who will get which cockpit?

Preparations for the 2010 DTM season are well underway, but who will get which cockpit remains a well-kept secret. The only driver to have been officially confirmed so far is Oliver Jarvis. The Briton will be taking over Tom Kristensen’s place and will be driving a current Audi A4 DTM this year. So, numerous cockpits are still up for grabs, and so many top drivers from the ranks of Formula 1 came to join the DTM in the past: Alesi, Frentzen, Häkkinen and Schumacher are prominent examples.

Talking to dtm.tv, Manuel Reuter, who was an active driver in the DTM himself until the end of 2005, brings Nick Heidfeld and David Coulthard up as potential candidates. “Nick Heidfeld would definitely be a candidate for the DTM”, the former professional driver says. “And as a personality, David Coulthard would ideally fit in the DTM.” While Heidfeld was still racing in Formula 1 last year and is still searching for a team for the upcoming season, David Coulthard has already had a little break from racing. “After an absence of two or three years, the batteries are recharged again”, knows Reuter. “At that time, many drivers are still only in their mid 30s and are eager to race again. The DTM provides a good platform, the cars are fun and the battle is hard.” In the near future, Reuter could even see Michael Schumacher as a DTM driver, but the latter first has a contract with Mercedes-Benz in Formula 1.
