Spielberg

Friday, 22. September 2017 to Sunday, 24. September 2017

For about 40 years Styria has been staging motor-sport events. Back in 1969, the circuit was opened under the name ‘Österreichring’. A project that experienced my ups and downs, in the past decades, thus reflecting the track layout. Nowhere else, the DTM drivers have to cope with similarly steep uphill sections like at the circuit in Austria’s ‘Murtal’ (Mur Valley). Since 2011 the series has been a regular guest at the Red Bull Ring – the official name since the circuit was reopened in 2010 – in every year. Spielberg’s picturesque Alps panorama make for a special atmosphere and the track layout for thrilling races. The past season didn’t represent an exception: the weekend at Spielberg once again provided spectacular and electrifying motor racing.

ONE TICKET SEVEN RACES.

The Red Bull Ring is a racetrack located in one of the most beautiful environments worldwide. And due to its topography, the circuit with its picturesque backdrop also features several sections that represent particular challenges for the drivers. In the past, the circuit was regarded as the fastest racetrack in the world. It was opened under the name ‘Österreichring’ on 26th July 1969 with a touring-car race. A high-speed circuit with characteristics that will represent major problems for the drivers and the operators of the facilities in the following years.

DTM made its first stop at the circuit in 2001. The winner in that race: Bernd Schneider, the future champion, with a Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM. But the circuit hosting the DTM debut didn’t even resemble original layout a lot. Due to several bad accidents, the circuit was subjected to modifications, shortened and reopened as A1-Ring. The fast ‘courage corners’ were eased, several stop-and-go sections represented overtaking possibilities and made for more thrilling races. Trend-setting characteristics. Afterwards, the A1-Ring represented the role model for many other circuit modifications, for instance in the case of the Hockenheimring. After Bernd Schneider’s win in DTM’s debut appearance at the circuit, the races in the following two years were won Marcel Fässler (Mercedes-Benz) but then, the end of the circuit seemed to be a done deed.

Following an investor switch and political bickering, parts of the facilities were demolished but from 2008 and the circuit was rebuilt under the name Red Bull Ring. Red Bull, the new operators, gave the circuit its new name and DTM was the first major series that announced to race there in 2011.The circuit was officially opened on 15th May, 2011 and some two months later, Audi’s Martin Tomczyk won the maiden race at the Red Bull ring on the way to securing the 2011 championship.

...DTM also raced at Spielberg in 2001, 2002 and 2003, before the circuit was rebuilt and renamed. These races, however, were held on an elder version of the track.

...  the DTM race in 2011 was the first major event at the circuit that had been re-opened as Red Bull Ring just two months ago. Since then, DTM made a stop at Spielberg in every single year.

...  that Bernd Schneider secured the 2001 DTM title early, at the A1-Ring

...   the series also raced in Austria in the days of ‘Old DTM’: in 1987 and 1988, at the Salzburgring.

...   Audi gamed away the manufacturers’ title in the 2014 race meeting at the Red Bull Ring. Following the controversial move of Timo Scheider, connected with the “Push him off”-affair, all the points Audi scored in the Sunday race for the manufacturers’ championship were disallowed.

... Lucas Auer (2015) was the first Austrian to have a contested a DTM race in Austria since Karl Wendlinger in 2003. In his rookie year, 2015, he finished sixth in the Sunday race at the Red Bull Ring, thus securing his best result in the season to date.

... a total of nine Austrian drivers made it to the points in DTM. These driver are – in alphabetical order: Lucas Auer (since 2015) Gerhard Berger (1985), Franz Klammer (1985 – 1987), Mathias Lauda (2007 – 2009), Roland Ratzenberger (1989), Mercedes Stermitz (1988), Dieter Quester (1988 – 1990), Karl Wendlinger (1989, 2002 – 2003) and Alex Wurz (1996).

“All in all it’s just great that DTM is coming to Austria. As usual, my family and friends will be on site to support me."Lucas Auer
