BMW: title contender for the sixth consecutive year

The BMW goal always remains the same: to win titles. And since the DTM comeback of the brand in 2012, they won impressive eight titles of the 15 that would have been possible. Last year, the Munich based manufacturer once again won the drivers’ title – courtesy of Marco Wittmann. In 2017, the DTM grid will feature six BMW M4 DTM vehicles, raced by experienced DTM drivers. When it comes to the drivers, BMW relies on continuity. The drivers are supposed to add another successful chapter to the splendid motor-racing history of BMW. The first DTM race ever, held on 11th March 1984 at Zolder, Belgium, ended with a one-two-three-four for the Bavarian manufacturer. The race was won by Harald Grohs in his BMW 635 CSi, with fellow BMW driver Volker Strycek finishing third in the same type of car and securing the first DTM title ever in the season finale. Up to 1992, BMW contested every DTM season and proved to be a regular factor in the battle for the title. Eric van de Poele (1987) and Roberto Ravaglia (1989) secured the big drivers’ championship trophy at the wheel of BMW touring cars. After their retirement, it took BMW 20 years to opt for their DTM comeback. But it was a comeback with a bang. Bruno Spengler won the 2012 drivers’ title right away, BMW Team Schnitzer secured the team championship and the manufacturers’ title also was won by BMW. In 2014 and 2016, Marco Wittmann gave BMW their fifth and sixth drivers’ titles. Some of the other outstanding highlights in the BMW motor-racing history are the triumph in the 1983 Formula One World Championship with the Brabham-BMW and courtesy of Nelson Piquet, 19 overall wins in the Nürburgring 24h Race and the triumph in the 1999 Le Mans 24h Race. In addition to the company’s works involvements in production car and GT racing, the brand always has been represented in the customer sport. So, the racing cars from Munich celebrate race wins and title triumphs all around the world. In addition, the company plans to extend its motor-racing programme in 2018 to the FIA World Endurance Championship, WEC, and the FIA Formula E Championship.
