The 2019 DTM half-term report

The 2019 DTM half-term report

The 2019 DTM nudged past its halfway point at Assen on Saturday when it had completed the ninth of this year’s 18 races.

With the Dutch weekend behind us, let’s take stock of a frantic start to the year, and see if we can identify some common threads as we head into the final four weekends of the title race.

Here’s the 2019 DTM half-term report

Races 1 & 2: Hockenheim (GER) May 3-5

On Saturday, Rene Rast looked set to chalk up his seventh consecutive DTM win before he was halted by a gearbox failure that allowed BMW’s Marco Wittmann to claim victory on a damp, grey afternoon. Sunday’s pole-sitter Philipp Eng looked very quick, but Rast pitted for fresh tyres behind the Safety Car, and used them to catapult to the front and dominate the day.

Races 3 & 4: Zolder (BEL) May 17-19

The Belgian track hosted the first-ever DTM race, back in 1984, and returned to the series after a 17-year absence. A race-one Safety Car helped Philipp Eng claim his first DTM victory on Saturday; the following day, Rene Rast usurped promising rookie – and pole-sitter – Sheldon van der Linde to win. Behind him, tyre degradation chaos prompted a frantic chase to the podium – won by Eng and Jamie Green.

Races 5 & 6: Misano (ITA) June 7-9

The Italian motorbike venue switched to a daytime event after last year’s rainy night-time antics. Audi guest driver, MotoGP ace Andrea Dovizioso, wowed with his speed; but it was Wittmann, who gambled on an early pit-stop after starting from the back, who capitalised on another Safety Car to take the win on Saturday. Nico Müller claimed a popular win on Sunday, from a forceful Eng and a puncture-delayed Rast.

Races 7 & 8: Norisring (GER) July 5-7

Another Safety Car period turned the tide for Rast, who bogged down at the start of Race One and fell to the back of the back before making a stirring comeback to victory. Behind him, Nico Müller again looked under control to take runner-up spot. On Sunday, BMW’s Bruno Spengler set himself up for his first win of the year with an audacious first-lap pass on three cars. Behind, Müller earned a drive-through for tipping Rast into a spin.

Races 9 & 10: Assen (NED) July 19-21

DTM’s first-ever visit to the Dutch ‘Cathedral of Speed’ was a terrific success. Saturday’s race was held under heavy rain and was dominated by Wittmann, Müller and Rast – the three drivers starting to put a stranglehold on the title fight. In Sunday’s race, tyre dramas beset the field: Mike Rockenfeller proved the most capable, whispering his car to victory from a sensational Wittmann, who had started last after an issue in qualifying.
