24 drivers – 24 questions: Answers by Gary Paffett

  • Gary Paffett wants to achieve his second DTM Championship
  • He finished the season 2015 with his first pole position in a long time.
  • The Brit loves sports. Also as a spectator.

In 2016, 24 drivers will be battling to make their big dream come true: winning the DTM champion’s trophy. International top-level drivers will be staging entertaining duels in 18 races on a total of nine weekends. We want to introduce the contenders from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz in detail and have asked each one of them 24 questions. In no particular order, the answers will be published over the next weeks as a part of our series ’24 drivers – 24 questions’. The first Mercedes-Benz driver to take up his turn is Gary Paffett. The experienced British driver occasionally caught the attention during the 2015 season, but also failed to live up to the expectations more than once. Paffett concluded the season in ninth place with 89 points.

Describe your 2015 season by dint of six terms: A fresh start with ART; Exciting races through the field; Successful podium finishes; Frustrating at times; A great year for the whole Mercedes-Benz team; Finished the season with my first pole position in a long time

My nicest DTM moment in 2015: Finishing 3rd from 23rd on the grid at Hockenheim Race 2

My worst/most disappointing DTM moment in 2015: Having an engine failure on Sunday morning at Nürburgring. This ruined my whole Sunday.

My personal highlights of the year 2015 (both private and job-related): Two of my sons, Harvey and Freddie, winning the “Player of the season Awards” at our local Rugby Club; Job-related, claiming pole position for the final race at Hockenheim in October.

That’s what annoyed me in particular (both in my private life and job-related): Not finishing further up the championship. I thought me and the team deserved better.

My favourite DTM colleague: Hmmm, that’s a difficult choice. Probably just Robert Wickens. We have a similar personality and a very similar way of driving, as well as the same weird sense of humour.

My most exciting/most thrilling 2015 DTM weekend: Spielberg. Just the difficult conditions and the exciting race on Sunday were great fun.

The biggest surprise of the 2015 season, for me: BMW’s lack of pace!

This change / these changes I would love to see for the 2016 DTM season: Points for more cars. It’s tough to only reward 10 people in a grid this competitive. DRS is creating a train of cars following each other, rather than overtaking each other. That is something that needs to be addressed, too. More realistic weight penalties. The gaps between cars were much too big at times last year.

If I hadn’t become a motor racer I would have liked to be a …?: A sportsman playing one of many other sports. I am so competitive that only sport can reward me enough.

That’s what I like particularly: Winning

That’s what I don’t like at all: Losing

The motto of my life: Be positive and never give up.
