24 drivers – 24 questions: Answers by Robert Wickens

  • Robert Wickens intends to become a title candidate for 2016.
  • Last year, he endured a frustrating second season half.
  • Getting a dog just before Christmas was a slight consolation and a personal highlight.

In 2016, 24 drivers will be battling to make their big dream come true: winning the DTM champion’s trophy. International top-level drivers will be staging entertaining duels in 18 races on a total of nine weekends. We want to introduce the contenders from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz in detail and have asked each one of them 24 questions. In no particular order, the answers will be published over the next weeks as a part of our series ’24 drivers – 24 questions’. This time, it's Canadian Robert Wickens's turn. The Mercedes-Benz driver scored his third DTM career victory at Norisring in 2015 and ended up 13th in the final standings with a total of 61 points.

Describe your 2015 season by dint of six terms: Rewarding, Difficult, Frustrating, Depressing, Improvement, Commitment

My nicest DTM moment in 2015: Norisring

My worst/most disappointing DTM moment in 2015: The entire second half of the season

My personal highlights of the year 2015 (both private and job-related): One of my private highlights was getting a dog with my girlfriend before Christmas. Job-related it was great to celebrate all of Mercedes’ success in 2015 during ‘Stars and Cars’.

That’s what annoyed me in particular (both in my private life and job-related): My form on the second half of the season really annoyed me, which also carried into my personal life!

My favourite DTM colleague: Any one of my Mercedes team mates but particularly Gary Paffett. He's been through it all in DTM and always has level headed opinion on everything

My most exciting/most thrilling 2015 DTM weekend: It has to be picking up the win in Norisring. Nothing bets the feeling of a victory, and it’s even more satisfying when you can manage to lead every lap.

The biggest surprise of the 2015 season, for me: My personal form in the second half of 2015. I’ve never experienced such hard times week after week. It was very character building and something I have learnt from.

This change / these changes I would love to see for the 2016 DTM season: Softer tyres to improve lap time and overtaking, Shootout Qualifying because it’s a rush! I’d also like more international races, it would be a dream to race these cars all over the world. And lastly more temporary circuits. The atmosphere during street races is amazing both for the drivers and the fans!

If I hadn’t become a motor racer I would have liked to be a …?: A hockey player or a tennis player! I am a big fan of both sports, but luckily for me I am in motorsports because I am a terrible player at both of them!

That’s what I like particularly: Having fun

That’s what I don’t like at all: Spiders

The motto of my life: Don’t stress over things you can not control

My goal for the 2016 DTM season: Rebound from 2015 to be a title contender in 2016

My favourite racetrack: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. It looks simple on the outside, but it such an adrenalin rush when you put the lap together. On the DTM calendar, Budapest. I love the rhythm of the track, the driver works non-stop.

My role model/s: Don’t really have any. I looked up to Greg Moore as I was starting karting, but he passed away in a crash in 1999.

My favourite sportsman/sportswoman: Travis Pastrana, the guy is amazing at everything he does. It would be so much fun to spend a day so he could teach me the back flip stuff!

My favourite song: Whatever I feel like at the time

My favourite band: Whatever I feel like at the time

My favourite movie: Anything that makes me laugh, or keeps me on the edge of my seat

My favourite actor /actress: Ryan Reynolds, I’d probably get him to play me if someone would make a movie about me ;)

My favourite dish: Sushi

My favourite car (apart from your DTM racer): Mercedes G63 AMG in Canada, Mercedes C63S AMG in Europe.

I am a good DTM driver because…: I’m a fighter, I will not give up until my goals are complete. I am not afraid to improve myself.
