ART Grand Prix – new stars in the DTM sky
In the 2015 DTM season, Mercedes follow the example of their rivals Audi and BMW: just like the Bavarian manufacturers, the Stuttgarters also will contest the battle for the 2015 touring-car racing crown with eight vehicles. The latest asset to the Mercedes-Benz camp is the French ART Grand Prix squad around Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur that recently showcased itself in the Mercedes-Benz Gallery at the Avenue des Champs-Elysées.
This Swabian-French connection, however, is anything but a new liaison. It’s just the next chapter in a long-term partnership: powered by Mercedes engines, ART GP – in their Formula 3 years called AMS Formule 3 – secured seven team titles and six drivers’ championships in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Among the title winners racing for ART also were – in addition to the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Romain Grosjean and Nico Hülkenberg – drivers such as Jamie Green and Paul Di Resta who are well-known names in DTM, today. Therefore, the new project represents a consequent step from being a talent pool to competing with an own team in touring-car racing at the highest level.
For the forthcoming season, the ART GP driver line-up promises to make for particular excitement. Former champion and experienced Mercedes ace Gary Paffett will be teamed up with Austria’s DTM rookie Lucas Auer who celebrated several successes in the 2014 Formula 3 European Championship and will now make his debut on the grid of the most popular international touring-car series.
This means that ART combines experience on the one hand with juvenile energy on the other – a mix that definitely should have what it takes to put a decent amount of pressure on the established teams.
