Career stepping stone: Formula European Masters in the DTM support programme
New name, proven programme: in the coming season, the Formula European Masters will replace the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. The races of the young-gun series, that will be a part of the support programme in every single race meeting of the 2019 DTM season, will be contested with the cars used to date in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. With Van Amersfoort Racing and Team Motopark, two well-known teams already emphasized that they intend to contest the new series.
With Yuki Tsunoda, Motopark already signed a Red Bull Junior for the 2019 season. The 18-year old is the reigning Japanese Formula 4 Champion and promoted by Red Bull. Furthermore, Team Principal Timo Rumpfkeil plans to enter another three single-seaters for 2019. Van Amersfoort Racing Team Principal Frits van Amersfoort also plans to contest the coming season with four cars. “The Formula European Masters race weekends offer the young drivers particularly much track time,” he said. “That’s crucial to press ahead with their development. We already talked with several young talents who all are really interested in racing for us.”
The Formula European Masters continues the tradition of globally extremely competitive young-driver series on the DTM platform. Just like the Formula 3 Euro Series and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, the new Formula European Masters also will be promoted by ‘Formel 3 Vermarktungs GmbH’. Since 2003, Formula 3 championships in the DTM support programme consistently have been offering young drivers the best conditions on the way up to the top categories of motor racing. In these series’, the young drivers always benefited from a lot of track time. They can cover a lot of kilometres and learn – in cooperation with their professional teams – to squeeze the maximum out of their cars and themselves.
Apart from Formula 1, DTM also represents a perfect prospect for the young Formula 3 drivers. For DTM aces such as Marco Wittmann, Bruno Spengler, Jamie Green und Joel Eriksson, Formula 3 represented the stepping stone to a successful DTM career.
