The comeback of a champion
A champ is back. Pascal Wehrlein is going to contest the 2018 DTM season for Mercedes-AMG. After two years in Formula One, the German once again will be an integral part of the popular touring-car series.
“I have fantastic memories of DTM and this applies in particular to my title triumph in 2015. I also attentively followed the DTM race action during my Formula-One years. Since my final DTM race to date, the 2015 season finale at Hockenheim, quite a lot of things have changed in the series. But I like challenges and just can’t wait for going out with our new car for the first time. As I see it, the first tests just can’t begin early enough.”
In the past two years, Wehrlein contested two Formula One seasons for Manor Racing and the Sauber F1 Team and in both years he was the one who scored the only points for his team, with his best result being the eighth place he secured in the 2017 Spanish GP. Simultaneously to his duties as GP driver he also worked as official test and reserve driver for the World Championship winning Silver Arrows of Team Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.
In the years prior to his switch to Formula One, from 2013 up to and including 2015, Wehrlein contested 38 DTM races, celebrated three race wins and secured six podiums. ”Pascal established as top in driver in DTM at top speed and in 2015, he became the youngest champion in the history of the sport,” says Team Principal Ulrich Fritz. “Therefore, we are extremely delighted that Pascal rejoins us for our final year in DTM. We kept our contact alive throughout his days in Formula One. In the meantime, a lot of things have changed in DTM: new cars, new tyres, new regulations. But we are convinced that Pascal with his experience and commitment will quickly re-familiarise himself with DTM.”
