Eight DTM aces to go racing this weekend
What are the DTM aces doing when there isn’t a DTM race meeting on the calendar? They nonetheless get behind the wheel of a fast racing car, press the pedal to the metal and keep on gathering valuable race kilometres.
Seven DTM drivers travel this weekend, 22nd to 23rd April, to the Eifel for the qualifying race for the Nürburgring 24h Race. Mike Rockenfeller, Maro Engel, Nico Müller, Bruno Spengler, Maxime Martin and Marco Wittmann as well as Tom Blomqvist – the latter two even in the same car – will charge across the legendary ‘Green Hell’ with the GT racers of their manufacturers to prepare for the classic endurance race held at the same venue about a month later.
Not in the Eifel but also active is Mattias Ekström. The Swede will be at Montalegre, Portugal, to contest the second round of the World Rallycross Championship (WRX). The reigning champion already won the season kick-off at Barcelona.
Now the Swede wants to extend his lead over his competitors in the small locality not far from the Spanish border. Last year in Portugal, however, a mistake in turn one cost Ekström the chance of making it to the finals.
Incidentally, the third WRX round will be contested in support programme of the DTM season kick-off at Hockenheim. And here, Ekström will be racing in both series. Tickets for the DTM season kick-off from 05th to 07th May can be ordered here at DTM.com.
