Expert tip: Wehrlein and Paffett will win at Lausitzring
There is one thing that the DTM season opener at the Hockenheimring made clear: in the 2015 season, the field is even closer together than it already was in the years before. Two winners from two races. Little details had huge effects in the qualifying sessions. Prognoses are very difficult prior to the second DTM weekend at Lausitzring, May 29 till 31. Nevertheless, Norbert Haug, the former head of motorsport at Mercedes-Benz and current ARD DTM expert is giving it a try. We asked him for his expectations.
The initial situation: “In the DTM season opener at Hockenheim, Audi had an advantage over its rivals. In no other series, the differences in the lap times that decide about victory or defeat are as small as in the DTM. After the two victories at Hockenheim, Audi now has to race with performance weight and basically is one to two tenths of a second down on BMW and Mercedes-Benz. BMW will have drawn its conclusions from the rather lacklustre season start. Therefore, I am considering all three brands and a good dozen of drivers in the field to be capable of winning,” Haug says. “However, at Lausitzring, Mercedes has always been strong. To check this, one only has to look at the winners’ list of all the DTM races held at Lausitzring so far, where some 80 percent of the races were won by Mercedes-Benz. However, it would be wrong to think that Mercedes already has this weekend’s races in the bag because of that.”
Haug’s prognosis for victory: “The weather forecast for this weekend at Lausitzring is good: a 15 percent chance of rain for the race on Saturday evening, only a three percent chance of rain on Sunday afternoon. Perhaps a slight advantage for Mercedes, but not big enough to ensure that Audi and BMW wouldn’t be in contention for victory, too. When I would have to place a bet: Pascal Wehrlein and Gary Paffett will be the winners at Lausitzring.”
