Mattias Ekström comes second in the WRX World Championship
Mattias Ekström was a good sport about it. “I’m delighted with being the biggest loser in the world,” said the Swede following the WRX season finale held last weekend at Cape Town. After having secured the vice-championship in DTM, Eki now repeated this feat in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
By finishing third in the South African WRX event Eki passed Petter Solberg for second position in the championship although he had contested - due to a scheduling conflict with DTM – a round less than the Norwegian. Meanwhile, Johan Kristoffersson who had secured the 2017 title early, also won the finale in South African. In the team championship, EKS secured third place.
“It goes without saying that we always want to win but we just weren’t fast enough, in the season finale,” said Ekström who won 4 of the 12 rounds of the season. “Nonetheless, I will celebrate this success together with the team. It was a long year of motor racing and now I’m looking forward to the off-season.” With a total of 10 WRX rounds won, he is – together with Petter Solberg – the most successful driver in the WRX history.
