Paffett rings in sunday with best time
The onset of rain on Sunday morning at times turned the DTM warm-up into a succession of skids – and for the first time this race weekend rain tyres were mounted onto the DTM cars of Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Opel. As the track then dried out Gary Paffett left the field in his wake with a lap time of 49.061 seconds towards the end of the session. A total of four HWA Mercedes topped the timings on the monitor after 30 minutes on the track.
Christijan Albers and Bernd Schneider were the closest behind Paffett – the Dutchman was just 0.043 seconds adrift of the pace, while reigning DTM champion Bernd Schneider was 0.067 seconds behind the Briton. Alesi was significantly slower in fourth place on Sunday morning, some two tenths of a second off Paffett’s time.
Just like in the super pole, it was again an Opel which was the fastest non-Mercedes car: Manuel Reuter and Peter Dumbreck drove the fifth and sixth fastest lap times in their Opel Vectra GTS V8. Timo Scheider, fourth in the super pole, came eighth. Warm-up did not go well for the Audi squad. Tom Kristensen had to settle for ninth place, while Emanuele Pirro rolled into the pits with a damaged rear left tyre.
The season’s highlight on the Norisring begins at 1400 CET. ZDF will broadcast the fifth race of the season live from 1340 CET.
