Rast on ice
In the DTM races, René Rast usually hasn’t to cope with black ice. Therefore, the racing on 19th and 20th January represents a new experience, for the 2017 DTM Champion in his Audi RS 5 DTM. The 32-year old will contest the ‘GP Ice Race’, held on an ice track at Zell am See, Austria. From 1937 to 1973, the ice races at Zell am See proved to be real crow pullers and meet-ups of the international motor-racing elite. After a 45-year break, an organisation team around Ferdinand Porsche and Vinzenz Greger now revives this tradition.
Rast already is curious to find out how the spikes on his 500bhp DTM racer cope with the icy conditions. “I raced on ice in a kart against Nico Rosberg,” he reveals, “And I was in Sweden with the Audi Experience. Racing on ice represents the maximum challenge for every racing driver. Everything is happening as if you were racing in slow motion but you have to be fully focused, nevertheless. It’s fun on the one hand but on the other we always want to feel the limit.”
