Schneider the quickest in the warm-up session
In the warm-up session, held on Sunday morning, Bernd Schneider turned out to be the benchmark. Behind the wheel of his AMG-Mercedes C-Class, the German set a 1:20.537 lap time: not only the fastest time of the session alone but also the fastest lap Schneider completed at the MOTOPARK Oschersleben. In the qualifying session, when Schneider finished tenth, his Sunday morning time would have secured him the second position on the grid. A remarkable performance was delivered by Pierre Kaffer who finished second, with his 2004 spec Audi A4 DTM, by crossing the line some four tenths of a second behind Schneider, with pole-sitter Tom Kristensen coming third. At the end of the last 30-minute test prior to the fifth round of the season, 12 of the 20 DTM drivers were split by less than a second.
Gary Paffett, currently second in the championship, lapped the 3.667-kilomertre circuit located at the ‘Magdeburger Börde’ exactly as fast as Kristensen, with both crossing the line in 1:21.048 minutes. Martin Tomczyk was 0.068 seconds slower than the aforementioned drivers and finished fifth. DTM rookie Mika Häkkinen, who had had to settle for 20th position, in the qualifying, secured sixth place, while his brand-mate, Bruno Spengler, took his 2004 spec AMG-Mercedes C-Class to seventh position.
Reigning DTM champion Mattias Ekström had to make do with eighth place, more than eight tenths of a second behind Bernd Schneider. The best of the Opel drivers, Marcel Fässler, set a 1:21-397-minute lap to secure ninth place, with Jean Alesi completing the top ten.
