Skistars at the Red Bull Ring – Hirscher wins internal three-way battle
Next to the Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz DTM stars, three ski stars are also in the centre of the attention at Spielberg this weekend: Marcel Hirscher, Aksel Lund Svindal and Felix Neureuther competed as guest drivers in the Audi Sport TT Cup on Saturday and acquired new experiences. “It was very hot. That is not something we are normally used to,” Hirscher gave one example of many.
The Austrian is an undisputed ace in alpine skiing, having won the overall world cup four times in a row. On the asphalt at Spielberg, he turned out to be unbeatable for his opponents as well. “Actually, we did quite well, nobody lapped us. According to me, that is not too bad. After all, we made quantum leaps in our learning curve, from absolute nobodies to would-be race drivers within a couple of days only. It simply was great fun.”
Neureuther found his limits in the third corner of the race already, when his Audi TT spun. Later on, he became involved in a hot duel with Svindal, in which he came out on top. “Of course, heading out onto a race track like this without a lot of previous knowledge is an incredible challenge. However, it was incredible fun. Here at Spielberg, it really is quite tough. The battle with Aksel was great, great fun and I am already really looking forward to tomorrow’s race.” Svindal admitted to being a real speed addict. After only 15 laps of preparation in the race car, the Norwegian also has massive respect for the Red Bull Ring: “The fact that we dare to do this, after only 15 laps of preparation, is actually crazy. However, we have learned in skiing to have respect for the speed. Fortunately, everything went well. It simply was a great experience, simply fantastic.”
For all three, the adventure continues with the second race on Sunday morning at 11.00 hrs. Hirscher: “At the start, we just have to keep our heads down. Today, we slightly lacked the courage to do so, apart from Felix, but he noticed after three corners that it doesn’t work ie that. It would be nice when we manage to still be in the pack after one lap.”
