Thrilling support programme at Brno
In addition to international aces such as Häkkinen, Frentzen, Alesi and Kristensen, there are also some Czech racing greats going to enthuse their compatriots during the course of the 2005 DTM season’s fourth round, held this weekend (3rd to 5th June) at Brno. Among them Jarek Janis and Jan Charouz, who are contesting the round of the Italian Formula 3000 Championship held as DTM support race, with Jarek in particular having made a great debut in the series: in his maiden appearance on the grid of the 450bhp single-seaters, he succeeded in securing second place right away.
“I’ll give my very best to win the race at Brno,” said 21-year old Janis, who is contesting the Japanese Formula Nippon, this year. While the 2005 Italian Formula 3000 Championship is contested by both former FIA F3000 Championship squads and new teams – such as the one of Renault’s Formula One ace Giancarlo Fisichella.
Another highlight of the DTM support programme will be the two rounds of the Skoda Octavia Cup – also called ‘The Small Czech DTM’, as it has evolved into the Czech Republic’s most popular and competitive national touring car series, in the ninth year of its existence. The close and dogged battles also remind to the DTM, and even the qualifying format with the fastest ten drivers contesting a Super Pole session resembles DTM. On the grid of the series: experienced racing drivers and ambitious young guns. The most popular man on the grid is Finland’s Jani Paasonen, who contests the World Rally Championship as Skoda works driver.
